She was one of nine siblings, four boys and five girls. She was nurse by profession and married at age 35 to widower Theodore Maeder. Theodore died when their youngest child Gustave was 3 years old. Vinnie supported her family working as a midwife in the town of Harrismith. She later moved to Pretoria, to be close to her children while they studied and attended high school.
